To calculate the number of watts or BTUs needed for a room:
Find the volume of the room by multiplying the width times length times height in metres. This will give you the heating requirement in Watts. To convert to BTU multiply the Watts figure by 3.41.
- Lounges and dining rooms multiply by 50.
- Halls and kitchens multiply by 30.
- Bedrooms, multiply by 40.
- Bathrooms multiply by 90.
- Rooms facing North add 15%.
- French windows add 20%.
- Double glazing deduct 10%.
- For a very cold climate such as windy, high altitude locations, add 10%.
